Fishing
Being a fishing village, Loreto is best known for activities that involve fishing – both as a recreation and as a sport. Of course, it is better known around the world as among the prime locations for sport fishing events, and thus spawns an entire Loreto industry geared towards catering to fishing enthusiasts. Every summer, Loreto is becomes a sort of fishing mecca, with people from all over the globe coming to fish for its famous “dorado” (also known as the common dolphin fish) as well as several species of marlin (primarily the black, Atlantic, and striped kinds) and sailfish (which are favored by fans of fly fishing). Winters in Loreto are favored for their abundance in fish like the California yellow tail amberjack and deep sea fishes. But anyone can go fishing anytime in Loreto; fish species like the snapper and seabass can always be found in Loreto.
Fishing tournaments are held in Loreto every July and September, to coincide with Loreto’s most popular (some describe it as Loreto’s emblem) fish, the dorado, which are most plentiful from July to September. The islands off the coast of Loreto (which are nevertheless part of Loreto’s territory) provide spots for the quieter sorts of fishermen, away from the hurly-burly of the summer tournament events of Loreto fishing.
Despite the apparent popularity of Loreto as a fishing location, however, it is made sure that it does not become too overrun by tourists. This possibly serves as a precaution against the possibility of overfishing in Loreto, which would destroy the town’s major source of livelihood. Instead, fishing in Loreto (especially true for off-season fishing in Loreto) is often guided or supervised by the locals.
Bait and charter are provided for dabblers and hard-core enthusiasts alike, for fairly reasonable prices, often offered at the hotels scattered all over Loreto. Charters provided for fishing in Loreto vary in sizes, but are often adequately supplied for any contingency. Most of the skippers that handle these charters are trustworthy – a good number of them have been Loreto fishermen since they were children. They provide superb assistance to the less experienced, and excellent conversation for the enthusiasts.
Loreto is an excellent place to go fishing, and in fact, you haven’t really been to Loreto if you didn’t at least go angling there.
